During the summer months of the 2016 season, the Atlanta Braves hosted the annual Home Run Readers program in partnership with Subway and Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS). The program promotes reading and healthy eating habits to students in grades K-12 throughout Georgia.

The Home Run Readers program is a web-based summer reading initiative that encourages students to continue to practice their reading skills during their summer vacation. Students can visit www.braves.com/reading to answer questions about the book they read. Each student who completed the program received free tickets to a Braves game and a Subway “Fresh Fit for Kids” meal voucher.

To promote the program, we visited libraries across Metro Atlanta with a surprise guest, our mascot Homer! Braves staff were in attendance to read a book to students and help Homer hand out prizes, tomahawks, hats and more!

To celebrate the end of the summer and another successful year of the program, all Home Run Readers were invited to a “Read In”, a pre-game party at Turner Field on Saturday, September 17 before the Braves took on the Washington Nationals. Braves pitcher John Gant and utility player Brandon Snyder stopped by to read a few books to the kids. After the audience heard from the Braves players, GPLS hosted several rounds of Homer BINGO! that featured baseball lingo. BINGO! winners took home special Braves prizes.

Thank you to GPLS and Subway for the continued partnership and to John Gant and Brandon Snyder for helping us celebrate our Home Run Readers!
